I’m Raquel Castro, an independent textile and surface pattern designer with over 20 years of experience working with major fashion retailers in Brazil, where I developed a strong understanding of textiles, prints, colour, and product development. Today, I bring that experience into my own creative practice, creating original patterns inspired by nature, flowers, and the little details of everyday life.

My work is characterised by hand-drawn illustrations, expressive floral compositions, and carefully considered colour palettes. I love exploring the balance between artistic expression and commercial design, creating patterns that can translate beautifully across fashion, home décor, stationery, and lifestyle products.
Working with Procreate and Adobe Illustrator, I combine my industry experience with a personal, illustrative approach to surface pattern design.
My signature style is playful, floral-led, and rich in detail. I'm particularly drawn to expressive botanical compositions, layered florals, and patterns filled with movement, texture, and colour.
I enjoy combining delicate hand-drawn elements with bold, sometimes unexpected colour palettes, often incorporating soft textures and a slightly whimsical touch.
My aesthetic balances a contemporary feel with a sense of nostalgia, creating designs that are joyful, versatile, and full of personality.
I work with both vector and raster illustration, primarily using Procreate, Adobe Illustrator, and Photoshop.
My creative process often begins with hand-drawn digital illustrations, which I develop into seamless repeating patterns or standalone placement artworks.
With a background in textile and fashion product development, I have experience preparing artwork for different printing techniques, including screen, rotary, and digital printing, always considering the final application of each design.t yourself and your work...
Throughout my career, I've worked with major Brazilian fashion companies, including Renner, Loungerie, and Scalina, developing collections across apparel, lingerie, sportswear, and textiles.
My professional experience also extends to the European market, where I worked in sustainable sportswear design and product development.
Today, my independent creative practice focuses on original surface patterns and illustrations suitable for fashion, home décor, stationery, children's products, and lifestyle collections. I'm particularly interested in licensing opportunities and collaborations with brands that value distinctive, illustration-led designs.
My creative journey began in Brazil, where I studied Fashion Design and built a career spanning over 20 years in the fashion industry.
Over the years, I progressed from designer to design coordinator and management roles, working with major Brazilian fashion companies, including Renner, Loungerie, and Scalina. My experience covered collection development, textile design, print development, and collaboration with suppliers and production teams.
After moving to Ireland, I continued my career in sustainable sportswear, eventually becoming Head of Design at OCEANR.
Throughout this journey, my passion for illustration, colour, and prints remained constant. Today, I bring together my industry knowledge and artistic interests through my independent surface pattern design practice, exploring a more personal and expressive creative direction.
Floral and botanical patterns are at the heart of my work. I'm particularly passionate about creating intricate, playful compositions filled with flowers, leaves, and organic shapes.
I enjoy experimenting with different repeat structures, scales, and colourways, from dense, all-over floral patterns to more delicate arrangements and geometric-inspired compositions.
My work includes seamless repeating patterns and standalone placement illustrations, often incorporating hand-drawn textures and layered details to give each design its own character.
I share my surface pattern designs, illustrations, and creative process through my online portfolio and social media, where I document the development of my artwork, from initial sketches to finished repeating patterns.
My portfolio includes original collections developed for textiles, fashion, stationery, home décor, and lifestyle applications.
I'm always open to new creative collaborations, licensing opportunities, and projects that bring original artwork into everyday products.
