Amer Sports, Inc. is a Finnish multinational sporting goods company headquartered in Helsinki. Founded in 1950 as Amer-Tupakka (a tobacco manufacturer and distributor), the company evolved over decades from an industrial conglomerate with interests in tobacco, shipping, publishing, and vehicle importing into a focused sporting goods group. In December 2018, a consortium comprising Anta Sports (China's largest sportswear manufacturer), FountainVest Partners, Anamered Investments, and Tencent completed a takeover of Amer Sports valuing the company at €4.6 billion - 40% over average market value. Amer Sports remained a separate business entity under this ownership. In February 2024, Amer Sports re-listed on the New York Stock Exchange, raising $1.4 billion and achieving a $6.5 billion valuation. Chip Wilson, founder of Lululemon Athletica, owns approximately one-fifth of Amer Sports.
No singular group-level design direction. Each brand maintains independent creative and product design teams. Arc'teryx is the most design-forward brand in the portfolio in terms of surface design thinking: the brand's visual language is built on precisely engineered textile surfaces, colour system, and technical material selection. Peak Performance's Swedish origin gives it a distinct Scandinavian sportswear aesthetic with clean surface design sensibility.
Amer's journey into sporting goods began in 1974 with the acquisition of Finnish ice hockey gear maker Koho-Tuote. A sports division was formally established in 1986 following the acquisition of a majority stake in golf equipment maker MacGregor Golf (from Jack Nicklaus). The pivotal Wilson Sporting Goods acquisition followed in February 1989 (the largest foreign acquisition in Finnish history at the time), bringing the largest US sports equipment manufacturer into the portfolio. Atomic (Austrian ski manufacturer) was acquired in 1994; Suunto (Finnish sports instruments) in 1999; and Salomon (French outdoor sports company) from Adidas for €485 million in 2005 - the year the company formally renamed itself Amer Sports Corporation. Notable interim history: the company acquired Finnish textile and design company Marimekko in 1985, held it through a period of approximately €50 million in losses, and sold it to Kirsti Paakkanen in 1991. Peak Performance (Swedish sportswear) was acquired from IC Group in April 2018. Divestments in the 2019-2022 period included Mavic (cycling equipment), Precor (home fitness equipment, sold to Peloton for $420M in December 2020), and Suunto (sold to Chinese firm Liesheng in January 2022).
Amer Sports' brands operate through own-brand retail stores, wholesale to sporting goods retailers, and e-commerce. The Wilson brand has official equipment supply relationships with the NFL, NBA, MLB, and major tennis Grand Slams - providing commercial surface design context at the highest level of professional sport. Anta Sports' acquisition agreement stipulated that Anta would provide R&D and production resources for Chinese market expansion, representing a technology transfer and manufacturing capability-sharing arrangement rather than a licensing deal per se.
Amer Sports operates as a portfolio of premium and performance sporting goods brands, each occupying distinct positions in their respective markets. Arc'teryx commands the premium end of the outdoor/technical apparel market. Salomon is a leading brand in trail running, Alpine ski, and outdoor footwear. Wilson is the official ball supplier for the NFL, NBA, MLB, and various tennis Grand Slams. Atomic and Armada address the ski/Alpine market; Peak Performance occupies premium ski apparel and lifestyle. The Anta Sports ownership provides R&D resources and facilitates Chinese market expansion - a strategic priority given that Anta is China's largest sportswear manufacturer.
Amer Sports' relevance to surface pattern design is concentrated in its apparel brands and most significantly in its historical ownership of Marimekko:
