Giorgio Armani S.p.A. is an Italian luxury fashion house founded in Milan in 1975 by Giorgio Armani and architect Sergio Galeotti (with capital from the sale of Armani's Volkswagen Beetle). The company designs, manufactures, distributes, and retails haute couture, ready-to-wear, leather goods, shoes, accessories, and home interiors across a portfolio of sub-brands. As of 2017, it was Italy's second-largest fashion group behind Prada. Giorgio Armani died on 4 September 2025 at the age of 91. His succession plan - established through the Giorgio Armani Foundation - provides for a sale of up to 54.9% of the business to a preferred luxury group, with LVMH, L'Oréal, and EssilorLuxottica named as candidates.
Giorgio Armani's aesthetic was built on understated luxury, clean tailoring, and deconstructed suiting. The brand's surface design approach is restrained: texture, fabric weight, and cut are primary design tools rather than print or pattern. Armani/Casa extends this aesthetic into interiors - neutral palettes, tactile materials, and architectural forms. The Armani/Fiori and Armani/Dolci sub-brands apply Armani's controlled aesthetic to floristry and confectionery packaging. Armani stopped using animal fur across all collections in 2016.
The Armani Group operates through a combination of company-owned stores and franchise operations. Key licensing deals include:
In April 2024, Giorgio Armani Operations was placed in judicial administration following investigation into alleged use of illegal and undeclared Chinese labour. In August 2025, the Italian competition authority (AGCM) fined the Armani Group €3.5M for alleged unfair commercial practices in bag and leather accessory production. Armani Junior and Armani Baby are sold at Breuninger and Peek & Cloppenburg in European department stores.
Armani occupies the premium-to-luxury tier across multiple product categories. The flagship Giorgio Armani and Emporio Armani ready-to-wear lines show at Milan Fashion Week. A|X Armani Exchange operates as the accessible diffusion line (270 stores, 31 countries). Armani Privé is the couture line. The brand's international retail presence spans megastores in Milan, Hong Kong, Munich, Tokyo, and New York. EA7, the sportswear brand, supplies kit to SSC Napoli and Olimpia Milano. The brand's licensing model delivers broad category coverage: eyewear (EssilorLuxottica to 2037), beauty and fragrance (L'Oréal to 2050), and watches (Fossil Group from 2014; Parmigiani Fleurier from 2021).
Armani/Casa is the most directly pattern- and textile-relevant division. Launched in 2000, it produces home furnishings including fabrics, supplied by the historic Venetian textile manufacturer Rubelli. This partnership gives Armani/Casa access to woven textile patterns, jacquards, and upholstery fabrics within the Rubelli range. Furniture and kitchen production is handled by Molteni Group; bathroom furnishings by Roca (Armani/Roca). Armani/Casa distributes through 183 Armani stores worldwide and supplies interiors to Armani Hotels.
In jewellery, the 2022 "Josephine" high jewellery collection incorporated Paisley motifs executed in chalcedony and grey diamonds, inspired by Joséphine de Beauharnais - a documented use of a classic surface pattern motif in luxury product design.
Armani's fashion textiles operate through in-house manufacturing following a strategy of licence buyback (Antinea 1990, Simint 1996, Intai 1998). Early manufacturing was licensed to Gruppo Finanziario Tessile (GFT, from 1978).
