Chloé is a French luxury fashion house founded in 1952 by Egyptian-born Gaby Aghion, who sought to offer luxury prêt-à-porter - a concept new at the time. In 1953, Jacques Lenoir joined, formally managing the business side while Aghion led creative development. The first collection was presented at Café de Flore in 1956. Aghion and Lenoir ran the house until 1985, when it was acquired by Alfred Dunhill Ltd. (now part of Richemont). The Richemont Group has owned Chloé since 1985. Headquarters: Avenue Percier, 8th arrondissement of Paris; regional offices in New York, Tokyo, Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Dubai. Current creative director: Chemena Kamali (from October 2023). CEO: Laurent Malecaze (from 2024).
Note: YAML location field shows "Switzerland" - Chloé is headquartered in Paris; its parent Richemont is Swiss. This appears to be a placeholder data error. YAML preserved as found.
Chloé's foundational aesthetic is bohemian Parisian femininity - defined through romantic print, flowing fabrics, and a light-touched material sensibility. The Gabriela Hearst era (2020-2023) introduced sustainability-led material choices. Chemena Kamali (from 2023) has been associated with a return to the brand's more expressive, print-forward heritage. The brand presents at Paris Fashion Week.
Chloé's early decades were defined by a practice of hiring young designers who went on to build significant careers: Christiana Bailly, Michèle Rosier, Maxime de la Falaise, Graziella Fontana, Guy Paulin. Karl Lagerfeld became main designer from 1966, defining the brand's bohemian 1970s identity; customers included Jackie Kennedy, Brigitte Bardot, Maria Callas, and Grace Kelly. The first Chloé boutique opened at 3 rue Gribeauval in Paris in 1971.
Creative directors: Karl Lagerfeld (1974-1988, 1992-1996), Martine Sitbon (1988-1992), Stella McCartney (1997-2001), Phoebe Philo (2001-2006), Paulo Melim Andersson (2006-2008), Hannah MacGibbon (2008-2011), Clare Waight Keller (2011-2017), Natacha Ramsay-Levi (2017-2020), Gabriela Hearst (2020-2023), Chemena Kamali (2023-present).
Phoebe Philo (2001-2006) launched the bags, small leather goods, and shoes categories in 2002, introducing the Paddington bag - one of the first mainstream "It" bags. The See by Chloé diffusion line was established in 2001 (RTW licensed to SINV SpA, Italy; in-house for bags, shoes, jewellery); announced for phase-out in 2022. Maison Chloé (showrooms, VIP fitting rooms, working archives) opened at 28 Rue de La Baume in 2017. In 2023, Chloé collaborated with Angelina Jolie's Atelier Jolie.
Richemont subsidiary. HQ: Avenue Percier, 8th arrondissement, Paris; Maison Chloé (archive and showrooms) at 28 Rue de La Baume. Global boutique network spanning Toronto, New York, Paris, London, Tokyo, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Singapore, Bangkok, Seoul, Dubai, and others. Fragrance: Coty (from 2005). Chloé operates in the upper-mid luxury tier within the Richemont portfolio alongside Cartier, Dunhill, and Vacheron Constantin. Its bohemian, feminine aesthetic distinguishes it from harder-luxury competitors. The annual Prix Chloé at the Festival de Mode de Hyères (since 2012) positions the brand as a patron of emerging fashion talent.
