Jil Sander S.p.A. was founded in Hamburg in 1968 by German designer Jil Sander. The first womenswear collection launched in 1973; menswear followed in 1997. Boutiques throughout the 1990s were designed by New York architect Michael Gabellini. The company went public on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange in 1989 (Sander retained voting control). The 1990s represented the brand's commercial peak, with flagship openings in Tokyo, Hong Kong, Taipei, and Paris (Avenue Montaigne, 1993), and the Hamburg HQ relocating to redesigned 18th-century palazzi on Harvestehuder Weg (1995). Prada Group acquired 75% in 1999 for more than $100 million; Sander departed shortly after. She returned in 2003 as creative director for a planned six-year term but left again after 18 months. Raf Simons served as creative director from May 2005 to 2012. Change Capital Partners bought the brand from Prada for ~£68 million in 2006; Onward Holdings (Japanese multi-brand fashion) acquired it for €167 million ($244M) in September 2008. OTB Group acquired 100% of Jil Sander in March 2021. Luke Meier and Lucie Meier served as co-creative directors 2017-early 2025; Simone Bellotti (ex-Bally) was appointed as successor in early 2025. Radical minimalism: surface design through omission rather than addition. Clean line, premium fabric, mono-tone palette, architectural silhouette. Raf Simons's tenure is considered a high-critical-acclaim period - Suzy Menkes described some Simons pieces as "exceptional." The Meier partnership maintained critical regard while broadening tactile warmth within the minimalist system. Simone Bellotti (from early 2025) represents the most recent repositioning - his 2025 Milan debut included a limited-edition vinyl EP collaboration with Bochum Welt (Gianluigi Di Costanzo), signalling an arts-integrated brand direction.

European luxury fashion - positioned at the intersection of minimalism and high-end tailoring, competing with Bottega Veneta, The Row, Lemaire, and Brunello Cucinello in the premium understated luxury segment. The brand's minimalist identity has attracted consistent institutional regard from critics and buyers, though commercial performance has been volatile under multiple ownership changes. OTB Group ownership integrates Jil Sander into a portfolio alongside Diesel, Maison Margiela, Marni, Viktor & Rolf, and Amiri - a multi-brand Italian fashion group with a track record in creative direction of complex legacy brands.
