Michael David Kors (born Karl Anderson Jr., August 9, 1959, Long Island, New York) launched his women's label at Bergdorf Goodman in 1981. He enrolled at the Fashion Institute of Technology in 1977 and left in 1978 to work at boutique Lothar's on 57th Street, New York, where he became designer and visual display head. In 1990 he launched KORS Michael Kors as a licensee, which went on hold following a 1993 Chapter 11 filing caused by closure of the licensing partner. In 1997 Kors was named the first women's ready-to-wear designer for French house Celine, a role he held until October 2003.
