Nike, Inc. is an American athletic footwear and apparel corporation headquartered near Beaverton, Oregon. The world's largest supplier of athletic shoes and apparel, it was founded on January 25, 1964 as Blue Ribbon Sports (BRS) by University of Oregon track athlete Phil Knight and his coach Bill Bowerman. In its first year, BRS sold 1,300 pairs of Japanese running shoes, grossing $8,000; by 1980, Nike held a 50% share of the US athletic shoe market. The company officially became Nike, Inc. on May 30, 1971 - taking its name from Nike, the Greek goddess of victory - and the Swoosh logo was designed by graphic design student Carolyn Davidson in the same year.
Nike markets products under its own brand and sub-brands including Nike Golf, Air Force 1, Nike Dunk, Air Max, Nike Blazers, Nike Skateboarding, and Nike CR7. It also owns the Air Jordan brand and Converse subsidiary (acquired 2003; sole remaining subsidiary as of 2020). Revenue $46.3 billion (FY2025). CEO Elliott Hill, returning to the company after a period away, took over from John Donahoe on January 13, 2020; Donahoe succeeded him in 2024 with Hill returning. Layoffs of approximately 2,200 positions were conducted across January and April 2026 as part of a turnaround plan.
Nike's design culture is documented through several figures: Bill Bowerman (co-founder; performance product innovation); Carolyn Davidson (Swoosh graphic designer, 1971); Tinker Hatfield (named designer; signature shoe designer; University of Oregon uniforms). The company's "Move to Zero" sustainability programme (from 2019) includes design commitments: men's and women's collections contain at least 60% organic and recycled materials. Nike Grind programme (from 1993) recycles old shoes into sports surface materials. Water-free dyeing materials adopted in Southeast Asian factories (from 2016). In 2023, Nike committed to eliminate kangaroo leather in favour of synthetic alternatives.
Blue Ribbon Sports initially operated in Eugene, Oregon as a distributor for Japanese shoemaker Onitsuka Tiger. Bowerman experimented with a waffle iron in 1971 to create a new rubber sole - producing the "Moon Shoe" in 1972 (named for waffle-tread footprints resembling astronaut moon prints), then the "Waffle Trainer" in 1974. The relationship with Onitsuka Tiger ended in 1972; BRS launched its own line bearing the Swoosh logo. Jeff Johnson coined the name "Nike." The Swoosh was first used on June 18, 1971, and registered with the US Patent and Trademark Office on January 22, 1974.
Wieden+Kennedy (W+K) has been Nike's primary ad agency since its first national television ads in 1982. Dan Wieden coined "Just Do It" for a 1988 campaign - ranked by Advertising Age as one of the top five advertising slogans of the 20th century. Nike became Advertiser of the Year at Cannes in 1994 and 2003.
Key acquisitions and divestments: Cole Haan (1988, sold 2013); Bauer Hockey (1994, sold 2008); Hurley International (2002, sold); Converse (2003, $309M, retained); Starter (2004, sold 2007); Umbro (2007, sold 2012); RTFKT Studios (December 2021, virtual shoe/NFT company). Data acquisitions: Zodiac (consumer analytics, March 2018); Celect (predictive analytics, August 2019); Datalogue (digital sales/machine learning, February 2021). In November 2019, Nike ceased selling directly through Amazon, focusing on direct customer relationships.

Nike's SPD relevance spans graphic identity, footwear surface design, uniform manufacturing, and digital design:
The Swoosh (designed 1971): The Swoosh logo was designed by Carolyn Davidson - a graphic design student at Portland State University - for a fee later settled at shares in the company. Registered January 22, 1974, the Swoosh is the most recognised athletic brand mark globally. The Paradise Papers (2017) revealed Nike transferred ownership of the Swoosh trademark to a Bermudan subsidiary (Nike International Ltd.) to generate royalty-based profit structuring - confirming the Swoosh is Nike's primary commercial IP asset. The Swoosh is applied to every Nike product as a surface graphic element.
Waffle sole design (1971-1972): Bill Bowerman used his wife's waffle iron to experiment on rubber, producing a waffle-patterned sole that grips surface without spikes. The waffle tread of the "Moon Shoe" (1972) and "Waffle Trainer" (1974) is a documented functional surface pattern applied to footwear - a grip texture pattern created from a kitchen mould.
Air Jordan brand and sneaker colourway culture: The signing of Michael Jordan in 1984 and the creation of the Air Jordan brand produced a new model of footwear as design object. Air Jordan shoes are released in specific colourways, materials, and graphic treatments - with "Quickstrike" limited edition regional releases creating collector demand. The Air Jordan XX3 (2008) was described as a "high-performance basketball shoe designed with the environment in mind." The Air Max 1 Quick Strike Fourth of July shoe (2019, featuring a Betsy Ross flag motif) was withdrawn at Colin Kaepernick's request due to the flag's cultural associations - a documented case where a graphic motif applied to a shoe produced commercial and cultural consequences.
Nike Elite socks (late 2000s-2010s): Nike Elite basketball socks evolved from plain white or black to available in "bright colors inspired by throwback basketball uniforms, often with contrasting bold abstract designs, images of celebrities, and freehand digital print" (per source). This is a documented product line in which surface pattern design (including digital print) was applied to a performance athletic accessory, transforming it into a fashion item.
NikeLab (streetwear line): Nike introduced NikeLab as a premium streetwear-focused line - documented as a distinct design direction beyond performance apparel.
RTFKT Studios / Dunk Genesis Cryptokicks (from December 2021): Nike acquired RTFKT, a virtual shoe company producing NFTs. The Dunk Genesis Cryptokicks collection features 20,000+ NFTs; a Takashi Murakami-designed piece sold for $134,000 in April 2022. This is a documented case of surface design applied to virtual footwear as a collector object.
NBA uniform design (official supplier 2017-2037): Nike signed an 8-year deal in 2015 to become the official NBA uniform supplier (from 2017-18 season); a 12-year extension announced October 2024 runs through 2037. Nike's Swoosh logo appears on NBA jerseys - documented as a first for the league. Nike designs and manufactures uniforms for the NBA, WNBA, and NBA G League. The design of sports team uniforms is a documented SPD application: jersey graphic identity, colourway, typographic layout, and material specification are all surface design decisions made at scale.
Tinker Hatfield (named designer): The source documents Tinker Hatfield as a Nike designer who leads the design of the University of Oregon football program's unique uniform combinations (issued before every game day) and who also redesigned the university's logo. Hatfield is a documented named designer working in the applied surface and apparel design tradition within Nike.
University of Oregon football uniforms: Nike designs unique combinations for the University of Oregon football program for every game day - confirmed as a live product design programme led by Tinker Hatfield.
