Prada S.p.A. was founded in 1913 in Milan by Mario Prada and his brother Martino as Fratelli Prada, initially retailing imported English leather goods, steamer trunks, and luxury accessories from a store in the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. Miuccia Prada inherited the company in 1978 and, with business partner Patrizio Bertelli (whom she later married), transformed it from a luggage shop into one of the world's leading luxury fashion houses. The company was appointed Official Supplier to the Italian Royal Household in 1919, incorporating the House of Savoy's coat of arms and knotted rope design into the logo. Revenue reached €4.2 billion in 2022, with profit of €776 million. In April 2025, the Prada Group acquired Versace from Capri Holdings for €1.25 billion.
Miuccia Prada's design approach is consistently described as conceptual and intellectually rigorous. The "ugly chic" label applied from 1996 describes a deliberate inversion of conventional fashion desire - outfits initially appearing unglamorous that reveal considered relationships between form, fabric, and cultural meaning. The Pocono nylon and simple inverted triangle logo represent a reduction of luxury signalling to material quality and construction rather than ornament. The 1996 aesthetics pivot is regarded as one of the most significant moments in late-twentieth-century fashion design culture.
Miuccia Prada began producing waterproof Pocono nylon backpacks and totes from 1979, using a military-specification fabric her grandfather had previously used as steamer trunk covers. Ready-to-wear womenswear launched 1988; menswear 1998. Miu Miu, a subsidiary brand targeting younger consumers, launched in 1992. The brand pursued an acquisition strategy in the late 1990s - Church & Company (English shoemaker, 83% stake, 1999), a joint Fendi stake with LVMH (1999, sold 2001), Helmut Lang (1999, sold 2006), and Jil Sander (1999, sold 2006). Andrea Guerra was appointed CEO in January 2023 to manage a generational transition from Bertelli to his children. Raf Simons joined as co-creative director in February 2020. The Versace acquisition (completed December 2025) is intended to establish a large Italian fashion group to rival French luxury conglomerates; Donatella Versace stepped down as creative director after 27 years and became brand ambassador.
Core product categories: ready-to-wear (womenswear and menswear), leather goods (handbags, luggage, shoes), accessories, eyewear (licensed to Luxottica), and fragrances and cosmetics (licensed to L'Oréal from 2021). Prada Skin and Prada Color cosmetics and skincare launched 2023 through L'Oréal Luxe. Watches were produced 2007-2012. Active subsidiaries include Miu Miu and Church & Company (English footwear). In 2024, Prada partnered with Axiom Space to develop the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU) spacesuit for NASA's Artemis III mission.
Prada operates flagship stores in major international shopping districts, including architecture commissions from Rem Koolhaas (New York Broadway Epicenter 2001; Los Angeles 2004) and Herzog & de Meuron (Tokyo Aoyama Epicenter 2003). Eyewear is licensed to Luxottica; fragrances and cosmetics to L'Oréal. The brand went fur-free from 2020 and eliminated kangaroo leather use. In 2019, Prada announced it would eliminate fur from collections and all house brands as of 2020, citing commitment to innovative materials and ethical products.
Prada is positioned at the upper tier of global luxury fashion. The Hong Kong Stock Exchange listing in 2011 raised $2.14 billion. Online retail through Net-a-Porter and Mytheresa began in 2016. As of March 2018, sales returned to growth after a period of decline since 2014, with stock rising 14% on the news. The brand holds high desirability rankings across consumer luxury reports. The Versace acquisition signals a strategy to scale into a multi-brand Italian luxury group.
Prada's surface and textile design identity is defined by two primary signatures:
