Selfridges Retail Limited was founded on 15 March 1909 by Harry Gordon Selfridge, an American entrepreneur, at 400 Oxford Street, London. The building was designed by Daniel Burnham (architect of the Marshall Field's main store in Chicago), making its construction one of the earliest uses of steel cage frame construction for a UK department store. Selfridge's model - placing merchandise on open display, front-and-centre perfume counters, and transforming shopping into a social and cultural event - established the modern British department store format. The chain was acquired by the Liverpool-based Lewis's in 1951, by the Sears Group (Charles Clore) in 1965, and demerged from Sears in 1998. In 2003, Canadian businessman Galen Weston acquired Selfridges for £598 million; the store became the flagship of Selfridges Group, which also includes Brown Thomas, Arnotts, Holt Renfrew, and De Bijenkorf. In December 2021, the Weston family sold the majority of Selfridges Group to a joint venture of Central Group (Thailand) and Signa Holding (Austria) for ~£4 billion; acquisition completed August 2022. Following Signa's bankruptcy, Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) acquired Signa's shares in 2024 - leaving Central Group with 60% and PIF with 40%. Selfridges does not produce its own branded fashion collections; its creative output is in retail curation, window display, event and space programming, and buying. The store's distinctive identity is defined by bold visual merchandising, art-commissioned window design, and its history as a cultural retail space. The Birmingham store's architectural disc-covered exterior is the most singular piece of institutional design in the Selfridges portfolio.
