Tory Burch LLC is an American women's fashion label founded by designer Tory Burch in February 2004, opening its first retail store in Manhattan's Nolita district. When Oprah Winfrey endorsed the label on her television show in April 2005 - calling Burch "the next big thing in fashion" - the brand's website received eight million visits the following day. The company has since grown to 400 stores worldwide, including flagships in New York, Los Angeles, London, Paris, Rome, Tokyo, and Seoul; its largest store is its Shanghai flagship, opened 2014. The brand is also carried in 3,000+ department and specialty stores including Saks Fifth Avenue, Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Bloomingdale's, Harrods, Harvey Nichols, Galeries Lafayette, Lane Crawford, and Isetan. As of 2024, the company was named to Time magazine's 100 Most Influential Companies, and Burch was listed among its 100 Most Influential People globally.
Burch's design style has been characterised as preppy-boho and preppy-bohemian luxe: an American preppy sensibility layered with bohemian eclecticism, expressed primarily through colour, print, and pattern. The aesthetic references the American 1960s and 1970s - a period associated with bold graphic and decorative print in women's fashion. In the 2020s, Burch's "creative reinvention" has pushed the brand toward more directional, editorial print and surface design while maintaining the core accessibility of the label.
Tory Burch launched the label as "Tory by TRB" before settling on the current name. In 2009, she sold a minority stake to Mexican private equity firm Tresalia Capital; additional minority investors followed in December 2012 in conjunction with settlement of a legal dispute with her ex-husband. The company bought back Tresalia's stake in 2018. As of 2015, Burch had stated there were no plans for a public offering. Pierre-Yves Roussel joined as CEO in 2019, allowing Burch to focus more fully on design; in November 2020 Thibault Villet was named President of Asia-Pacific. The label began showing at New York Fashion Week with its first runway show in September 2011 and has continued each season. In 2021, the company announced a five-year educational partnership with Parsons School of Design. A concept shop on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles with Humberto Leon (January 2024) showcased the Spring 2024 collection, with the façade, interior, and some fashions featuring animal portraits by German photographer Walter Schels. Tory Burch collaborated with artist Rashid Johnson on bespoke pieces for the Met Gala in May 2025.
Ready-to-wear, shoes, handbags, accessories, watches, home décor, fragrance, and beauty. Watch production launched with Fossil in Fall 2014. The fragrance and beauty collection launched with Estée Lauder in Fall 2013; a long-term beauty licensing partnership with Shiseido began in January 2020. The Essence of Dreams fragrance collection launched in 2022; the Sublime fragrance (2024) was campaigned with Kendall Jenner. The home line was extended in March 2015 with lettuce ware produced in collaboration with Palm Beach artist and potter Dodie Thayer. Tory Sport covers running, studio, tennis, swimming, and golf performance categories. The brand was first to partner with Fitbit for fashion-oriented activity tracker accessories (Summer 2014).
Tory Burch operates own-store retail globally (400 stores) alongside wholesale distribution through 3,000+ department and specialty stores internationally. No IPO has been pursued; the company remains privately held. Key licensing partnerships: Fossil (watches, from 2014); Estée Lauder (initial beauty, 2013); Shiseido (long-term beauty licensing, from January 2020). The Parsons School of Design educational partnership (2021, five-year) creates a design talent pipeline.
Tory Burch positioned itself from launch as an accessible luxury label - aspirational in design and aesthetic but priced to reach a broad consumer base. In 2007, there were wait lists for Tory Burch fashions; the brand had become associated with the aesthetic values of television show Gossip Girl. The activewear extension Tory Sport (launched September 2015) entered the performance and athleisure market directly, with dedicated stores in New York (Fifth Avenue), East Hampton, and Dallas. The brand received the CFDA Accessories Designer of the Year award in 2008 and Harper's Bazaar Designer of the Year in 2023.
Tory Burch's design identity is explicitly and consistently built on colour and print. Source material describes the label as "known for color and print and often pay homage to styles of the 1960s and 1970s":
