Under Armour, Inc. is an American sportswear company headquartered in Baltimore, Maryland, manufacturing footwear, apparel, and accessories. Founded on September 25, 1996 by Kevin Plank - then a 24-year-old former special teams captain of the University of Maryland football team - the company began with a moisture-wicking synthetic microfiber T-shirt developed to replace the sweat-soaked cotton shirts worn under jerseys. Starting from his grandmother's Washington D.C. basement, Plank built the company from an initial $17,000 in sales in 1996 to $5.267 billion in revenue by 2019. The company IPO'd on NASDAQ in November 2005 (raising $153 million) and became one of the three major global sportswear brands alongside Nike and Adidas. Global offices span Amsterdam, Austin, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Houston, Jakarta, London, Mexico City, Munich, New York City, Panama City, Paris, Pittsburgh, Portland, San Francisco, São Paulo, Santiago, Seoul, Shanghai, and Toronto.
Under Armour's design direction has historically been driven by technical performance rather than fashion aesthetics - the brand built its identity on fabric function and athletic utility. The appointment of John Varvatos as Chief Design Officer in September 2023 indicates a strategic shift toward elevated design quality and fashion-adjacent positioning. Kevin Plank's return as CEO in April 2024 may re-centre performance innovation as the brand's primary design axis. The Curry Brand visual identity, developed with Stephen Curry, represents the brand's most fashion-forward sub-brand territory.
Under Armour's first major breakthrough came in 1999 when Warner Brothers used the brand in Oliver Stone's Any Given Sunday and The Replacements. Early growth was driven by uniform supply contracts with college athletics teams: Georgia Tech, NC State, and Arizona State were early partners; the University of Notre Dame 10-year deal announced January 2014 was at the time the largest apparel sponsorship in college athletics history. The company formed the Curry Brand (with NBA player Stephen Curry) in November 2020 as a standalone sub-brand competing with Jordan Brand. Project Rock, a product line co-developed with Dwayne Johnson, is a second significant sub-brand. In September 2023, John Varvatos was appointed Chief Design Officer. Kevin Plank stepped down as CEO in 2020, then returned to the role in April 2024. The company received Wells Notices from the SEC in July 2020 regarding accounting practices in 2015-2016.
Performance apparel (HeatGear, ColdGear, AllseasonGear product lines from 1996); footwear (running, basketball, training, golf); accessories; bags and sports equipment. The Tory Sport and Curry Brand sub-brands operate in activewear and basketball respectively. The brand produces team uniforms for college athletics programs including Notre Dame, University of Maryland, UCLA (10-year $280M deal), South Carolina, Wisconsin, Utah, and many others. Olympic competition garments include speedsuits for the US Speedskating team at the 2014 Winter Olympics (the Mach 39 suit) and bobsled and skeleton teams. The NFL named Under Armour an official footwear and glove partner (March 2025).
Under Armour operates Brand House flagship stores and factory outlet locations in the US, Canada, and China, as well as wholesale distribution through sport and fashion retailers. University athletics partnerships are a significant revenue and brand-building channel - deals with Notre Dame, UCLA, and Maryland (12-year extension, 2024) are among the most prominent. The company backed out of a 10-year MLB uniform deal in 2018 (saving approximately $50 million); Nike replaced Under Armour as the official MLB on-field uniform supplier from 2020. Under Armour is the official apparel partner of the Unrivaled women's basketball league (from December 2024).
Under Armour competes directly with Nike and Adidas across performance sportswear, footwear, and lifestyle apparel. The brand's competitive positioning began in performance - moisture management technology, compression garments, cold/heat-regulation fabrics - before expanding into footwear, lifestyle, and fashion adjacency. Revenue grew from $281 million (2005) to $5.267 billion (2019). Market capitalisation exceeded $10.7 billion in November 2018. The acquisition of MapMyFitness ($150M, 2013), MyFitnessPal ($475M, February 2015), and Endomondo ($85M, February 2015) built a connected fitness data platform that extended the brand into digital services. An IBM Watson partnership (announced January 2016) applied cognitive computing to fitness data.
