Valentino S.p.A., also known as Maison Valentino, is an Italian luxury fashion house founded in 1960 by Valentino Garavani on Via Condotti in Rome, with backing from his father and Giancarlo Giammetti. The maison established its headquarters at Palazzo Gabrielli-Mignanelli in 1967, which remains the creative base and home of the Valentino Foundation. The registered office is in Milan. The house has been majority-owned by Qatari investment vehicle Mayhoola since 2012, with Kering acquiring a 30% stake in July 2023 with stated intention to purchase the entire company by 2028. Revenue was €1.4 billion in 2022, declining to €1.31 billion in 2024. Alessandro Michele, formerly of Gucci, has served as creative director since March 2024.
From Garavani's founding vision of Roman elegance and strong colour through Chiuri and Piccioli's Rockstud-era modernisation and Piccioli's progressive solo direction (2016-2024), the house has maintained couture craftsmanship as the non-negotiable design foundation. Alessandro Michele's first collection (Resort 2025) and debut runway show (Paris, Spring/Summer 2025) were reviewed as continuing Michele's maximalist, ornament-saturated aesthetic from Gucci - suggesting Valentino's design direction will increasingly foreground pattern, embroidery, and surface decoration.
Valentino made its international debut in Florence in 1962. The brand gained significant recognition in 1967 with a "no colour" collection in white, beige, and ivory - a deliberate rejection of the psychedelic patterns dominant in fashion at the time - and simultaneously introduced the V logo. The first Valentino menswear show at Milan Fashion Week took place in 1985. Garavani and Giammetti sold the company to Italian conglomerate HdP (partly controlled by Gianni Agnelli's Fiat group) for approximately $300 million in 1998. HdP sold to Marzotto Apparel for $210 million in 2002. The Marzotto family spun off fashion assets in 2005 to create Valentino Fashion Group; Permira acquired the house in 2007 for €2.6 billion. Mayhoola (Qatari aristocratic investment vehicle) acquired the company in 2012 for €700 million. Kering's 30% acquisition was announced July 2023. Creative direction has passed through Alessandra Facchinetti (2007-2008), the co-directorship of Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli (2008-2016), Piccioli as sole director (2016-2024), and Alessandro Michele (from 2024). CEO Ricardo Bellini leads the company as of 2025. In May 2025, Valentino Bags Lab was placed under Italian court judicial administration for one year following exposure of worker abuse.
Ready-to-wear (womenswear and menswear), Haute Couture, footwear, handbags, accessories, jewellery, eyewear, fragrance, and beauty. The Rockstud shoe and accessory line remains a core commercial product. Fragrance: licensed to Puig (2010-2018), then L'Oréal (from 2018); notable releases include the Voce Viva perfume (2020) with Lady Gaga as face. Eyewear: licensed through Marchon, Luxottica (2017-2021), then Akoni Group (10-year licence from December 2021). Red Valentino diffusion line (2003-2022) was initially licensed to Sinv SpA, brought in-house in 2009, and discontinued after Fall/Winter 2023.
Valentino operates directly owned boutiques globally; no franchise model is documented. Licensing is limited to two categories: fragrance/beauty (L'Oréal, ongoing) and eyewear (Akoni Group, 10-year licence from 2021). The Red Valentino diffusion line was discontinued as of Fall/Winter 2023. Kering's ongoing acquisition (30% stake as of 2023, full acquisition intended by 2028) will eventually incorporate Valentino into the Kering luxury group alongside Gucci, Balenciaga, and Saint Laurent.
Valentino operates at the top tier of Italian luxury fashion, competing directly with Dior, Givenchy, and other French and Italian couture houses in the international luxury market. The house presents both ready-to-wear and Haute Couture. The Rockstud accessory line - introduced under Chiuri and Piccioli's direction - became one of the most commercially significant luxury accessory launches of the 2010s, driving the brand's Renaissance. By 2015, the diffusion line Red Valentino accounted for approximately 10% of group sales before being shut down in 2022-2023 as the house focused on core RTW and couture. The Spring/Summer 2022 Haute Couture show, which featured models with a diverse range of body types, drew significant international attention.
Valentino's relationship to surface pattern design spans its entire creative history:

Valentino's relationship to surface pattern design spans its entire creative history: The "no colour" collection and pattern as aesthetic decision (1967): The decision to eschew the psychedelic patterns dominant in late-1960s fashion was itself a statement about pattern - the absence of pattern as a design choice.
