Vera Ellen Wang (born June 27, 1949, New York City) is an American fashion designer known internationally for her bridal gowns and eveningwear. Wang pursued competitive figure skating before transitioning into fashion, working as an editor at Vogue for 17 years (joining as the magazine's youngest editor) and subsequently at Ralph Lauren for two years before becoming an independent bridal wear designer at the age of 40. She opened her first design salon at the Carlyle Hotel in New York City in 1990. In December 2024, Wang sold the brand's intellectual property to WHP Global, a New York-based brand management firm, continuing as Founder and Chief Creative Officer and joining WHP as a shareholder. At peak (2018), Wang's revenues were reported at approximately $630 million.
Wang's design language is built on technical mastery of fabric and the tension between structural restraint and decorative surface work. Her bridal and eveningwear aesthetic draws on her art history training (Sarah Lawrence College) and her years observing fashion at Vogue and Ralph Lauren. In the 2020s, following the two-year sabbatical period, press commentary described the brand as developing a more experimental and fashion-forward aesthetic - "gutsy panache" and "distinctive fashion DNA" - suggesting an evolution toward stronger surface design expression. Wang's sale of the brand IP to WHP Global (2024) while retaining the Chief Creative Officer role indicates continued design leadership under a different commercial structure.
Wang attended the University of Paris, earned a degree in art history from Sarah Lawrence College, and joined Vogue upon graduation. After 17 years as a Vogue editor and two years at Ralph Lauren, she established her bridal design salon in 1990. The brand expanded from bridal into ready-to-wear, fragrance, jewellery, eyewear, shoes, and homeware. In 2002, Wang launched The Vera Wang China and Crystal Collection, entering the home fashion industry. In 2006, she reached an exclusive deal with Kohl's department stores for Simply Vera, a less expensive ready-to-wear diffusion line; the line launched in 2007. In 2011, White by Vera Wang launched at David's Bridal, offering bridal gowns at $600-$1,400. In spring 2012, she partnered with Men's Wearhouse for two Black by Vera Wang tuxedo styles. In 2012, the brand opened Vera Wang Bride Sydney and the first Asian flagship, Vera Wang Bridal Korea, in Cheongdam-dong, Seoul. After a two-year sabbatical (showing collections via film rather than runway), Wang returned to New York Fashion Week in September 2019 for her Spring/Summer 2020 show, marking the brand's 30th anniversary. The brand IP was sold to WHP Global in December 2024. Wang was recognised in the CFDA Womenswear Designer of the Year award in 2005 and the CFDA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013.

Vera Wang defined a recognisable position in American fashion as the leading high-fashion bridal designer - occupying a space between couture (in craftsmanship and celebrity reach) and accessible luxury (through diffusion lines and department store distribution). The celebrity wedding gown client list is among the most extensive in American fashion: Chelsea Clinton, Ivanka Trump, Alicia Keys, Mariah Carey, Victoria Beckham, Kim Kardashian, Khloe Kardashian, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Hilary Duff, Vanessa Hudgens, and many others. The Simply Vera diffusion line at Kohl's democratised the brand at scale. The Men's Wearhouse tuxedo partnership (2012) demonstrates cross-gender licensing capability.
