Woolrich, Inc. is an American outdoor clothing brand founded in 1830 by John Rich and Daniel McCormick at Little Plum Run, Dunnstable Township, Pennsylvania - the oldest manufacturer of outdoor wear in the United States. The original wool mill produced fabric for hunters, loggers, and trappers; the company later outfitted the American Civil War and Richard E. Byrd's 1939-40 Antarctic expedition. The manufacturing site at Chatham's Run developed into a company town now known as Woolrich, Pennsylvania. The Rich-McCormick Woolen Factory was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.
After decades of competition from L.L.Bean, Eddie Bauer, Timberland, The North Face, Patagonia, and Columbia Sportswear, Woolrich underwent significant restructuring from 1990 onward, including plant closures and outsourcing. In 2016, Italian company W.P. Lavori in Corso - which had previously licensed the Woolrich name for Europe as John Rich & Bros. - acquired a majority stake and formed Woolrich International; Japanese company Goldwin Inc. also acquired a portion. Private equity firm L-GAM Advisors acquired the W.P. Lavori majority in 2018. The last US manufacturing plant closed in Woolrich, Pennsylvania in September 2018. In November 2023, American designer Todd Snyder was appointed Creative Director of the new Black Label premium collection. Woolrich presented its Fall 2025 menswear collection at Milan Fashion Week in January 2025; a Target collaboration sold out almost immediately in October 2025.
Todd Snyder appointed Creative Director, Black Label premium collection, November 2023. Snyder is known for refined American menswear and engagement with heritage textile patterns. No creative director for the core Woolrich line is identified in the source.
Core: outerwear (parkas, jackets), wool flannel shirts, wool plaid apparel, casual and outdoor clothing, footwear (from 2013, via Portland Product Werks). Men's, women's, children's apparel, accessories, bags. Black Label: Todd Snyder-directed premium collection from November 2023.
Woolrich International was formed in 2016 by the consolidation of the American company with W.P. Lavori's European licensing operations (previously trading as John Rich & Bros.). Majority ownership passed to L-GAM Advisors (private equity) in 2018. North American retail: three stores (Woolrich PA, SoHo NYC, Woodbury NY) as of 2023. European stores: Germany, Italy, Netherlands. The October 2025 Target collaboration is the most recent documented mass-market distribution event.
Woolrich is positioned as an American outdoor heritage brand with premium and luxury repositioning under Italian and private equity ownership. The Todd Snyder Black Label appointment (2023) and Milan Fashion Week presentation (2025) signal deliberate editorial fashion repositioning alongside the core outdoor heritage identity. The October 2025 Target collaboration demonstrates accessible-channel distribution as a parallel commercial strategy. Competitors include L.L.Bean, Eddie Bauer, Timberland, The North Face, Patagonia, and Columbia Sportswear. The brand's 195-year history and associated textile heritage - particularly its association with American wool plaid and buffalo check - are primary brand equity.
Woolrich is an American heritage brand in which wool textile pattern - specifically buffalo check and wool plaid - is inseparable from its commercial identity across nearly two centuries of production.
Buffalo check and Woolrich plaid - the Woolrich buffalo check flannel shirt is one of the most recognisable American textile surface patterns. The large-scale check in heavyweight wool flannel - originally in red and black, but produced in multiple colourways - is directly associated with the brand's origin in outfitting hunters, loggers, and trappers. This pattern type functions as Woolrich's primary surface design signature and is foundational to the outdoor heritage apparel category more broadly. The pattern's commercial resonance extends well beyond the brand: buffalo check has become a generic American textile motif, but Woolrich's 195-year production history gives the brand historical authority over the pattern.
Wool fabric production - from the founding 1830 wool mill, Woolrich's primary product was woven wool fabric. The company has deep institutional history in woven wool textile design: check, plaid, stripe, tweed, and melton are all historically within its manufacturing scope. The Lanificio heritage - though US manufacturing ceased in 2018 - is central to the brand's trade credentials.
Camouflage and hunting patterns - the brand's origins in outfitting hunters place camouflage and blaze orange hunting patterns within Woolrich's historical product range; these are functional surface design applications in the outdoor market.
Todd Snyder Black Label (from November 2023) - Snyder is an American menswear designer known for integrating heritage pattern vocabulary (tartan, check, stripe) into contemporary menswear. His appointment introduces current fashion surface design direction into the Woolrich premium tier.
